The function of a tile trim is to provide a neat and finished edge to wall or floor tiling. It protects the edges of the tiles from damage and can be used to create a decorative border.
A tile trim (also called a tile edging strip) is a profile that can be fitted between the grout lines or at the edge of a tiled surface. It then provides protection for the external tile corners, preventing cracks and other damage. In addition, tile trims provide an attractive finish to your wall or floor.
Examples of possible applications for tile profiles include: connections between different materials, skirting board finishes, decorative edge finishes, finishing small walls, corners, alcoves, interior stair treads, as well as between different surfaces and rooms. This can be used with the following materials, among others: carpet, parquet, laminate, natural stone, or synthetic flooring.
Are there different types of tile profiles?
Tile trims, also known as tile strips, are available in various colours, materials, and sizes. For example, there are linear (straight) and round tile trims, as well as tile trims made of stainless steel or aluminium. Straight tile trims are particularly suitable for floors. Round tile trims are mainly used for tiled walls. When choosing a tile trim, it's important that the trim height is slightly higher than the tile thickness.
When choosing a tile profile, you should consider the following:
* **Material:** Tile profiles are available in various materials, including aluminium, stainless steel, brass, and PVC. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages in terms of durability, appearance, and cost.
* **Finish:** Profiles come in different finishes such as brushed, polished, anodised, or powder-coated. The finish should complement the tiles and the overall design of the room.
* **Type of tile:** The thickness and type of tile will influence the size and profile needed. For example, thicker tiles might require a deeper profile.
* **Application:** The profile's intended use (e.g., floor, wall, corner, step edge) will determine the specific shape and design required.
* **Durability and wear resistance:** If the area will experience heavy traffic or potential impacts, opt for a more robust material like stainless steel.
* **Co-efficient of expansion:** Consider how temperature changes might affect the profile, especially in areas with significant temperature fluctuations.
* **Ease of installation:** Some profiles are easier to install than others. Consider the methods of fixing and whether you require a professional installer.
* **Safety:** For areas like stair nosings, safety is paramount. Profiles designed for these applications often have anti-slip features.
* **Aesthetics:** The profile should not only be functional but also visually appealing and integrate well with the tile and surrounding environment.
* **Budget:** The cost of tile profiles can vary significantly based on the material, finish, and brand. Determine your budget beforehand.
1. What is the purpose?
First of all, consider what purpose you want to use a tile profile for. Is it a purely decorative finish or also for protection? Is there a transition to another material? Based on this, you can then choose a suitable tile profile.
- Protection: a tile edge is vulnerable. Particularly if it is in a place where there is movement.
- Sight: A tile edge can have frayed corners and unevenness. A tile profile conceals this from view.
- Transition: Is there a transition between your tiles and another material? Then a tile profile is ideal for making the transition smooth and protected. Consider tiles and PVC, for example.
2. Determine the correct size
Tile profiles are available in various sizes. When choosing a tile profile, it is important to consider the size of the profile and the tile adhesive that will be applied on top of it. An adhesive layer is often about 1 to 2 mm thick.
So, if you have a tile that is 8 mm thick, a 10 mm tile profile is the perfect size. This is because it takes into account the adhesive layer and leaves some leeway to compensate for irregularities in the subfloor. If the adhesive layer isn't taken into account, there's a high chance the tile won't align properly, and the adhesive will ooze out beyond the profile.
If you are using tiles with a rounded edge, then take the thickest side of the tile into account.
3. Choose the correct colour
Choose complementary colours when you want a beautiful colour-on-colour contrast, or opt for a colour that perfectly matches your tile. For example, consider classic colour combinations like white on black (for contrast), or choose two shades of grey that complement each other perfectly. Tile profiles are available in many different colours and finishes. For instance, you can also combine glossy tiles with matte ones, or glossy tile profiles with matte tiles. Remember that it always comes down to personal taste. And there's no accounting for taste.

Processing advice
Press the tile profile with the flanges into the tile adhesive and position it correctly. Comb the fixing flanges fully with tile adhesive, press the adjoining tiles into it and set them in place so that the top of the cover profile and the tiles are at the same height. There should be no hollow spaces under the tiles. Leave a joint of approximately 1.5 mm between the movement profile and the tiles and fill it completely with grout.
The cleaning agents must not contain hydrochloric acid or chlorine to prevent damage to the tile profiles.
Two lines of tile profiles
In our range of tile profiles, we distinguish between two different lines. The Basic line in classic colours and the New York line with more bold modern colours and tactile surfaces.
Basic line
The basic line is characterised by classic colours in good quality materials. All tile profiles supplied by Ripstaal are made of aluminium. The basic line includes, among others, brushed stainless steel, silver and white.
Blanke New York line
The New York profile line convinces with its familiar design in bold new trend colours and finishes.
Ideally combined with current tile trends. In addition to the proven edge protection for tiles, the high-quality textured surfaces offer a new tactile experience as well as a distinctive colour scheme.
In addition to the classic matt black bevelled variant, the range of tile profiles has been extended with matt champagne bevelled, matt gold, matt silver and matt titanium bevelled variants. For a bolder choice, the colours Sand Tropez, Stone Grey, Graphite and Oxid are also available.
