The Dutch manufacturer of steel framing systems Ripstaal Group Explains the safety advantages of steel frame construction in building. Safety is an important consideration in any construction project, and steel, with its high strength and sustainability, is an excellent building material that meets this objective.
Steel frame construction and electricity
According to Dutch regulations, steel skeletons must be earthed. In the event that a steel frame is exposed to an electrical current, proper earthing will ensure that the electricity is conducted directly into the ground, drastically reducing the risk of electrocution. Furthermore, Dutch law requires all houses to have residual current devices (RCDs), which provide further protection against electric shocks or even electrical fires.
Steel-framed houses and lightning
In all houses with steel frames, circuit breakers must be installed to prevent damage from lightning strikes and other electrical currents. In the event of a lightning strike, the electricity will flow directly into the ground without causing damage. There is a misconception that steel houses are more prone to lightning strikes; however, steel is safer than wooden frame construction because it is a better conductor of electricity and the energy cannot be dispersed around the frame in a destructive way.
Steel structures and fire
Steel frame construction is an excellent fire-resistant alternative to timber. As steel is non-combustible, it will not contribute to the spread of fire, add fuel to a fire, or produce harmful smoke and dangerous burning chemicals. House fires are practically uncontrollable once fire reaches the roof space. If this space is non-combustible, it is much harder for a fire to even take hold of the roof.
Steel frame is robust
When robustness is a consideration, steel frames meet all expectations. Steel is flexible, can be bent without breaking or cracking, and retains its strength during extreme weather conditions, such as storms or high winds. Steel is also resistant to termites, which further increases its durability.
Steel frame construction is predominantly specified abroad in extremely cyclonic regions, owing to its incredibly high strength-to-weight ratio. It is also the frame of choice for external constructions due to the product's resistance to stress during transport.
An excellent alternative to timber, steel frame construction offers the assurance of safety and is both durable and affordable.
